John A. Bartlett, MD

Duke University Medical Center

Dr. Bartlett is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases and a Senior Fellow in the Health Inequalities Program of the Sanford Institute for Public Health Policy. He has been the Principal Investigator of the Duke University Adult AIDS Clinical Trials Unit (ACTU) since 1991. Dr. Bartlett has served as the Principal Investigator on several international multicenter trials of antiretroviral therapy. He was a member of the International Steering Committee for the FTC-302 trial conducted in South Africa .

Dr. Bartlett currently serves as Vice Chair of the AACTG Site Evaluation Subcommittee, which oversees site performance at 34 units and has an annual budget of $50,000,000. He is a member of the Adult ACTG Treatment Strategies Research Agenda Committee and Vice Chair of the AACTG Subcommittee. He has practiced medicine in Tanzania , Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia . Dr. Bartlett is the recipient of a K24 Mid-Career Investigator Award. The major goal of this grant is to enhance the opportunities to perform patient-oriented research and to mentor young investigators entering a career of clinical investigation.

More recently, Dr. Bartlett was the recipient of a U01 International Clinical Trials Unit grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH)/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID), for which he is Principal Investigator. The major goal is to develop research infrastructure and conduct research on AIDS-associated coinfections in Tanzania. Additionally, he is an investigator for the AIDS International Training and Research Program, funded by the Fogarty International Center . The major goal of this grant is to build and develop an infrastructure with qualified researchers in Moshi, Tanzania and conduct clinical, epidemiological, operational, biomedical, and behavioral research on HIV prevention and treatment.
