Cynthia Binanay
Program Director, Hubert-Yeargan Center for Global Health
Ms. Binanay received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia and her Master of Arts Degree in Liberal Studies with a Graduate Certificate in Health Policy from Duke University. Her professional background includes multidisciplinary health care experiences which lend themselves well to addressing global health issues.
Ms. Binanay began her clinical career in hospital intensive care nursing in 1977, expanded her skills to include sales and marketing for Glaxo and Abbott Labs, followed by a long career running multicenter national and international clinical trials as a Project Leader at the Duke Clinical Research Institute. She has managed trials for both pharmaceutical and government sponsors in multiple therapeutic areas. Her primary interests include projects that provide the opportunity to improve health care policy and health for disadvantaged populations. Her research interests have specifically focused on the psychosocial impact of medical trauma and chronic illness in children.
Ms. Binanay credits her interest in global health to her multinational family, which includes adopted cousins from the Philippines and a Vietnamese sister. Ms. Binanay spent her first extended tour overseas in 1975 when she lived in the Philippines for 2 years as the Manager of Family to Family, Inc. What began as a feeding program providing 2 meals a day and medical care to children and families in need, has since grown to include a boarding school and foster care. Ms. Binanay and her husband, who is from the Philippines, both serve on the Board of Directors for Family to Family, Inc. They have established a summer internship with Family to Family for Duke undergraduates, graduate students, and nurses.
