G. Ralph Corey, MD

G. Ralph Corey, MD, is professor of medicine and infectious diseases at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC. He is the Principal Investigator for numerous multi-center clinical trials at the Duke Clinical Research Institute (DCRI) and director of the Hubert-Yeargan Center for Global Health.

Dr. Corey received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine and completed his residency, internship, and postdoctoral fellowship at Duke University Medical Center. He has received numerous awards, including the Robert J. Glaser Clinical Stars Program from Washington University in 2001 and the Distinguished Faculty Award from Duke University Medical Center in 2004.

As a principal investigator at the DCRI, Dr. Corey conducts international trials for bloodstream infections, hospital-acquired pneumonia, and complicated skin and soft-tissue infections. He initiated the Staphylococcus aureus Bacteremia Group (SABG), which has prospectively identified, followed, and collected data for more than 1700 patients over 10 years. He cofounded the International Collaboration on Endocarditis (ICE), which has prospectively identified, followed, and collected data for more than 2000 patients from 45 sites in 30 countries over the past 4 years and assisted in development of the Duke endocarditis database, which started in 1986.

Dr. Corey has authored 130 publications, including articles on leishmania, malaria, rickettsias, and Cache Valley fever virus, a new hemorrhagic fever agent. He has lived and worked in Brazil, Kenya, Thailand, China, and Tanzania. In 1985, he started the Duke International Health Program, which has sent over 200 residents overseas for training in Brazil, China, Pakistan, Thailand, Kenya, Tanzania and Australia. The creation of the Hubert-Yeargan Center became possible as a result of Dr. Corey's commitment to global health issues and the generosity of the Hubert and Yeargan families.
