David Walmer, M.D.

Dr. Walmer is the Chief of Reproductive Endocrinology at Duke University Medical Center and the Founder and Chairman of Family Health Ministries, Inc. (FHM). FHM is a non-profit organization who's mission is to bring resources into underserved communities by developing meaningful long-term relationships between impoverished communities, individuals and organizations.

Through his relationships at Duke, Dr. Walmer has brought together resources from many areas including the Duke Departments of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Medical Engineering, Internal Medicine, the Divinity School, the Nicholas School for the Environment, Duke Recovers, Inc. and the Duke Chapel into several communities in Haiti. These efforts have been applied to problems of cervical cancer prevention, public health, maternal child health, primary education and nutrition. Dr. Walmer & Dr. John Bartlett have also teamed up to bring the resources of cervical cancer prevention in Haiti to contribute the to ISAAC grant in Moshi, Tanzania at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre.

Dr. Walmer developed a course at Duke entitled, Healing in the Developing World and Care of the Underserved: a Medical and Theological Perspective. This course is part of the Medicine and Theology Program at Duke. The course began in 1997 as an outgrowth of Family Health Ministries, Inc. (www.familyhm.org) & it's mission to focus on relationships rather than projects. A trip to Haiti during the spring break has become one of the focal points of the course. Human illness is viewed from the perspective of relational problems within the human body (mind, body & spirit), and the health of families, communities, and countries.
