James H. Steele Veterinary Public Health Award, April 2005

John Crump, Duke faculty based fulltime at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre, Moshi, Tanzania, was recently awarded the CDC James H. Steele Veterinary Public Health Award. This Award is made to either current or former CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Officers who have made outstanding contributions to the field of veterinary public health.   The Award recognizes outstanding contributions in the investigation, control, or prevention of zoonotic diseases or other animal-related human health problems.  Dr. Crump received his award for his work on the transmission of enteric pathogens, particularly Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli , from animals and their environments to humans, for work addressing the contribution of bacterial contamination of animal feed to human food borne illness, and for studies related to the re-evaluation of fluoroquinolone breakpoints for extraintestinal Salmonella enterica infections.
