Medical Student Research Year and Clinical Electives

The Hubert-Yeargan Center for Global Health (HYC) is facilitating an opportunity for one to two medical students interested in doing an elective clinical rotation at Xavier University School of Medicine, Cagayan de Oro, Philippines. Inpatient and community clinical elective takes place at Northern Mindanao Medical Center, Maria Reyna Hospital, and a Community Health Care Center. Duke Medical Students will be responsible for their own financial support.

The Hubert-Yeargan Center for Global Health provides two unique opportunities for Duke medical students: MS3 Research Year Abroad (10-12 month duration) and MS2 or MS4 Elective Rotations (4-5 weeks duration). The HYC assists medical students of exceptional quality in their pursuit of a global health rotation on a case by case basis. This assistance includes:
Recommending potential rotation sites,
Providing limited funds for 3rd year research students, and
Providing mentorship for student projects.

Application Process
Exceptional candidates are reviewed on a case by case basis. Medical students proposing to study abroad must identify a faculty mentor and gain approvals from their Advisory Dean and Department Chair. Preference will be given to individuals who have already demonstrated a commitment to global health issues, specifically within the developing world. Criteria for candidate selection include:
Academic preparation and strength;
Sense of maturity, responsibility, and cultural sensitivity; and
Significance of pursuing a global health opportunity to further career goals.
