Global Health Medicine Residents
Global Health Residents from the Department of Internal Medicine at Duke extend the duration of their residency by 12 months to gain specific global health core competencies. This extended residency includes nine months of course work which will lead to a Masters of Science in Global Health and nine months providing clinical care and conducting research at one of the global sites.
While attending classes for an advanced degree in global health, the Global Health (GH) Resident will continue to engage in weekly continuity clinics in order to meet requirements for board certification in Internal Medicine. Following the Master's level course work, residents will complete their Global Health Master's thesis and practicum while engaging in mentored clinical and research activities at a global health training site. Throughout the residency there will be ample opportunity to access special events and lectures. Formal engagement with the GHRP begins in August of PGY3 when trainees matriculate in the Masters of Science-Global Health degree program.
Global Health Competencies for Medicine
| Topic | Goals | Objectives |
|---|---|---|
| Health Disparities | Develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed for culturally competent care. | GH residents will be asked to keep a log of instructive patient cases in which social determinants (e.g. education, access to clean water, food security, housing, early life experiences, social trauma, and gender) have played a major role in the health of a given patient. In the final month of the program, GH residents will undergo an oral examination in which 5 or more of these cases are discussed. |
| Tropical Medicine | Describe the major pathological processes, their biological alterations, and how they affect specific organ systems. | GH residents will receive a number of didactic sessions taught by Duke faculty on, but not limited to, tuberculosis, malaria, diarrheal diseases, HIV/AIDS, intestinal parasites, and important tissue parasitic infections such as schistosomiasis and cysticercosis. Competency in these areas will be assessed by case-study based oral examinations administered in the final month of the program. |
| Public Health | Develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes need to practice basic principles of prevention. | GH residents will receive intensive didactic training in public health through a master's level curriculum at Duke University. Topics of importance to include research methods, program implementation and evaluation, health policy, family planning and population programs, environmental health, and community healthcare. |
