Global Health Obstetrics and Gynecology Residents/Fellows

Global Health Residents/Fellows in Obstetrics and Gynecology (Ob/Gyn) will extend their training by 24 months to gain specific global health core competencies. This extended residency/fellowship includes nine months of Master of Science in Global Health (MSc-GH) course work and a total of twelve months providing clinical care and conducting mentored research at a Duke University international partner site. Ob/Gyn Global Health Residents/Fellows may be eligible for dual appointment as OB/Gyn faculty during their GH training, allowing them to integrate into the Duke OB/Gyn Department.

Eligible applicants will have completed ACGME requirements for Ob/Gyn and will be board eligible prior to participating in the Global Health Residency Program. Ob/Gyn residents who have successfully completed PGY3 (of a four year training program) are eligible to apply, with the approval of their Program Director. Internal and external candidates are encouraged to apply during the Fall of PGY4. In addition to a biweekly journal club, there will be ample opportunity to access special events and lectures throughout the training program.

Global Health Competencies for Obstetrics and Gynecology

Health Disparities	Develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for culturally competent care in low resource settings.	Trainees will keep a log of instructive patient cases in which social determinants (e.g. education, access to clean water, food, security, housing, etc.) have played a major role in the health and health care access of a given patient.
Maternal morbidity and mortality (M+M) in resource-poor settings	Describe the major causes of maternal M+M in local and surrounding communities.	Trainees will gain an acute appreciation for the impact of high levels of maternal M+M on women, their families, and communities. They will learn how to implement strategies for M+M reduction locally and regionally.
Surgery in resource-poor settings	Describe and demonstrate the appropriate application of surgical skills and technology in resource-poor settings.	Trainees will participate in all levels of surgical care in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the site's hospital and in surrounding affiliated health care facilities.
Public Health	Develop the knowledge, skills, and attitude needed to practice the basic principles of prevention.	Trainees will receive intensive didactic training in public health through completion the MSc-GH program. They will demonstrate the practical implementation of this knowledge at their respective overseas sites.
HIV/AIDS	Describe the effect of HIV/AIDS on women's reproductive health.	Trainees will gain substantive exposure to the effects of HIV/AIDS on women's reproductive health at all levels of care, from rural communities to tertiary care facilities.
