Background: The collaboration between Duke University and the Federal Universidad at Espirito Santos began in 1989 when Dr. Corey and Dr. Reynaldo Dietze began exchanging physicians between the two universities. Since that time over 40 Duke residents have had the opportunity to spend 3-6 months in Vitoria while over 20 Brazilian residents have worked and studied at Duke University. In addition Professor Dietze has worked with Dr. Corey and other Duke researchers to complete projects in malaria, leishmania, tuberculosis and ricketsial diseases.

Clinical Opportunities: The medical center at UFES contains a 250 bed inpatient facility with a large infectious disease unit and many outpatient clinics including HIV, Leishmania, and dermatology (including Leprosy).

Research: Research efforts in Brazil have centered on both clinical and basic science research in HIV, TB, Leishmania, Schistosomiasis and Malaria. Funds to support these research programs have been garnered from the WHO, NIH, the State Government of Espirito Santos and the Federal Government of Brazil.
