Background: In 2003, Family Health Ministries (FHM) began a partnership with Pastor Leon Dorleans to bring health care into an urban community of ~250,000 people who are currently traveling ~2 hours to receive health care.   The program, which will be based in one of his satellite churches, is being coordinated in four phases.   Phase I is the development of a public health program, which includes the hiring and training of 3 public health workers.   Phase II is the construction of a health care center and Phase III will be the hiring and support of Haitian staff (physician, nurse, administrator, and housekeeping staff).   Phase IV will be the coordination of visiting medical teams with the center.

Phase I:   Public health surveys were developed by combining preexisting surveys from the World Health Organization and information that was provided by residents of Blanchard.   The public health workers were hired in March of 2004 and began surveying households in Blanchard.

Phase II: Phase II has been limited by fundraising.   Plans for the building include room for the Haitian staff on the 1 st floor, visiting medical teams on the 2 nd floor and a guest house for visiting teams on the 3rd floor.   The foundation for the Blanchard Family Health Center was poured in May of 2004.   The walls and ceiling of the 1 st floor were completed in April of 2005.

Phase III:   This phase will commence when the 1 st floor of the facility is completed.

Phase IV:   The 1 st visiting medical teams will work on the site in June of 2005.

Clinical Opportunities: Health care providers are welcome to join short term medical teams that go to Haiti in June or November.   Send inquiries to family.hm@usa.net .

Research: A project to evaluate the utility of combining GPS mapping with public health data was initiated in the Blanchard Community in May of 2004.   The project is being executed on the ground by the public health workers in collaboration with FHM, Mr. Darryl Hofman (Duncan-Parnell, Inc.), Dr. Marie Lynn Miranda and Ms. Alicia Overstreet from the Nicholas School for the Environment at Duke.   The maps are being generated with TerraSync software using GPS equipment from Trimble, Inc.

Blanchard was investigated as a potential site for a biosand water filtration project in 2004.   A graduate student from the UNC School of Public Health traveled to Haiti with FHM in May of 2004 to evaluate the community.   It was felt that this community was not ideal for this project because the residents have access to drinking water from deep wells that were provided by nonprofit organizations.   These wells are being mapped as part of the GPS public health project.

A daily diarrhea survey is being conducted for all of the children under the age of 5 in 50 homes in Blanchard.
