Location: John Radcliff Hospital Academic Affiliation: Oxford University Site Director: John Bell, M.D., PhD Professor and Chair of Medicine David Warrell, M.D. Professor of Tropical Medicine and Infectious Disease Head Nuffield Department of Medicine |
Background: The Duke University - Oxford international health program has been in existence since 2000. Residents from Duke travel to Oxford and work with the medicine group at the John Radcliffe Hospital. The Oxford health system includes the university teaching hospital and the National Infirmary. |
Clinical Opportunities : The majority of the clinical experience takes place at the John Radcliff Hospital in Oxford. Day to day activities include rounding on the Nuffield Department of Medicine (NDM) clinical teaching team and acting as a House Officer on the clinical service. House officer responsibilities include taking call (referred to as being "on the take") every 4-6 nights. Other duties include caring for the ward patients, helping to form and document the clinical plan, discussing the plan with consultants, and presenting patients to the rounding attending physician which provides a good basis for understanding both the method and system of health care in the United Kingdom. Interests in specific therapeutic areas can be supplemented by participating in morning rounds in therapeutic related units |
Research: Although there are a number of options for research activities, a key area of concentration can be the study of health policy issues related to different delivery systems for health care as well as a focus on the practice and teaching of evidence based medicine. |
