Location: Beijing, China

Facility: Beijing Hospital

Site Preceptor: Professor Cheng Gang, MD, Chief of Oncology

Background: The collaboration between Duke University and Beijing Hospital began in 1987 when Dr. Corey and Dr. Joe Sanjuay, the Chairman of Medicine at Beijing Hospital, began a resident exchange program between their universities. Dr. Sanjuay, who had spent 1 year training at Duke, felt strongly that his staff should also train at the Duke University Medical Center. As a result, 13 Beijing Hospital residents and/or faculty have studied training in clinical medicine or research at Duke. Most of these individuals have returned to Beijing Hospital to become influential leaders in their field. Similarly, over 30 Duke house staff members have studied at Beijing Hospital concentrating in clinical medicine.

Clinical Opportunities: Beijing Hospital is a large 1,500-bed medical center that provides care for the entire city of Beijing and surrounding areas. To date, residents have spent time on a variety of services including cardiology (the Chief of Cardiology trained at Duke), pulmonology, oncology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, hematology, rheumatology, and others. Residents will also have the chance to spend time in the Alternative Medicine Department observing the effects of alternative Chinese medicine and acupuncture. This is primarily a visiting observer clinical rotation with skill development opportunities in creating case presentations and weekly lectures to fellow Chinese residents. Typically, Duke residents will be asked to present one or two lectures per week in addition to case discussions.

Research: Ongoing research projects are part of the daily routine of the faculty at Beijing Hospital. Duke residents have routinely not been involved in these efforts.
